Mohamed Nabie by Katie Nabie This oral history was prepared by Kadie Nabie, a student a Bladensburg High School, for her World History Class. My father, Mohamed F. Nabie, was born in Sierra Leone, West Africa. He is 50 years old and grew up in the town of Makeni. He is from the Mandigo tribe, but also speaks the common language of Sierra Leone, Creole. He also speaks Temne, another language in his country. He is a worldwide businessman, whose primary interests are his families and his native country. He is a kind person and doesn't care what people say about him or do about him or his families; therefore as a rich man in his country he is entitled to help poor people who need help. He has one daughter, Kadie Nabie, a honor roll student at Bladensburg High School. What are your earliest memories of your childhood? He told me he had both good and bad memories of his childhood. The good memories were that he had a very good education, good food, also his father gave him his love and the support he needed in life. He also said that his neighborhood was very fiendly and that he used to play soccer with the other kids. How did you decide to come to the United States? "I was issued a visa for my family and I and on March 15 my younger brother sent tickets and the flight was on March 19. After staying in the Gambia for over a year, I finally decided to move with my families to the United States to resettle and build wonderful home. That is the reason why I decide to come to the United States." What were your first impressions of the United States? "My first impression of the United States was that the country is advanced and the people are hard working. They do things with order and they care about the future and the teenagers." What
have you lost and what have your gained from your immigration to the
United States? What was the happiest day and happiest time of your life? "The happiest time day in my life is the day I was married. That day was terrific. It made me very happy and up till now I am living happily." What was the saddest day and saddest time of your life? "The saddest day was the day I lost my mother. It was a really sad day for me, because that time I was not in a good financial position (bankruptcy), but thank God the day has passed. That was the saddest day and time in my life." |
